Understanding Colic
If you are reading this blog, you are most likely a parent with a baby who won't stop crying and are looking for clear and concrete examples of what you can do to soothe your inconsolable baby.
How do you know if your baby is a colic baby?
Colic is diagnosed by the "rule of Threes" - if a baby cries at least three hours a day, three days per week, for three weeks in a row, then that baby is considered to be suffering from colic. Colic usually starts when the baby is two weeks old and ends when the baby is 100 days old, which is approximately three and a half months of age. In addition, premature baby is no more likely to suffer colic than a full term baby.
The sound of the cry of a colic baby is much more intense than that of other babies. A colic cry is often described as a piercing, relentless scream. It can stop as abruptly as it starts and is often heard during or immediately after a feeding, especially in cases when it is due to a gastrointestinal problem (infant reflux). The colic baby sounds as hough he is in tremendous pain. His face may be twisted and strained, causing onlookers to be highly concerned. If the colic baby symptoms are caused by reflux problems, signs of relief may not be apparent until after the infant passes gas or has a bowel movement. It seems to be much worse at night and during the evening hours.
Cause of colic
The most common cause of colic is stomach problems. Gas, constipation, , acid reflux, and overactive intestines are cited most frequently as the causes of colic baby. This is understandable considering the fact that all four of these factors can lead to a feeling of discomfort, causing a baby to cry.
Two different types of stomach problems are cited in the literature. One is much more severe than the other. The less severe problem is characterized by great discomfort due to problems with the baby's digestive system. A baby's digestive system is not fully mature until he or she is 100 days old. Therefore, gas and constipation may cause such great distress that the baby cries out in pain. The more severe problem is characterized by severe abdominal pain due to intestinal illness, such as stomach acid reflux. The good news is that newborns who have this medical problem can be treated naturally. In other words, under this specific circumstance, there is a cure.
Infant acid reflux
If a colic baby suffers from acid reflux, it means that acid and other stomach contents repeatedly flow back up into the esophagus. Every baby experiences some form of acid reflux at some time. Remember, babies have an immature digestive system, which is not fully developed until they are approximately 100 days old. For babies who are otherwise healthy, this problem occurs until their system matures.
The good news is that there are treatment interventions for infant acid reflux. Most doctors recommend that elevating the head of the baby's crib, or basket can reduce the chances of acid reflux and at the same time will not harm the colic baby. Placing the colic baby into an upright position both during and after feedings for approximately thirty minutes is also often helpful in reducing the chances of acid reflux.
If infant acid reflux is severe or does not get better with time, your doctor may recommend the use of medication as a treatment intervention. Over-the-counter medications primarily help with the problem of abdominal pain due to gassiness. For example, gripe water is what your doctor, lactation specialist, or advice nurse may recommend.

Colic baby who is suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (also known as infant GERD) can be treated naturally with certain gripe water, such as Colic Calm. Gripe water is a product that originally came from England and is now being manufactured in the United States. It is often given to baby who is colicky in order to soothe their stomachs. This product contains no fillers, binders, artificial flavors, artificial color yeast, wheat, gluten, soy, dairy, or starch. Therefore, many professionals will recommend it over some of other products that are manufactured for the same purposes because there is no side effect.
