Colicky Baby Relief - The Baby Swaddle

In utero babies are held in a small space without the ability to flail their arms and legs around the way they can once they are born. This tight, secure hold is comfortable and safe for them. If a baby is swaddled correctly, then he will once again feel comfort, safety, and security, which is exactly what he become accustomed to in his first nine months. This method has been around for centuries.

In the past, before women went to hospitals to deliver their babies, midwives came into their home to assist with labor and delivery. During these times, after the birth, the midwife swooped the baby away to be swaddled in a blanket before presenting him to his mother. Today, most mothers have the opportunity to meet their newborn first before they are whisked off by nurses who clean and wrap the baby in the comfort of their first baby blanket. It was the very first strategy that I attempted intuitively when my baby began to cry.

I believe that caregivers instinctively wrap their babies as a way to protect them from an array of environmental forces. For example, it is not uncommon for parents to wrap their infant in a blanket as a way to keep him snug and warm. Also, by wrapping an infant in a blanket, you are indirectly keeping him protected from others. The baby is less vulnerable with this shield wrapped around. How many parents do you know - and maybe you are one of them - who do not like it when others try to touch their newborns? Perhaps this is for good reason. Regardless of the reasons, it is human nature to protect your young. The swaddle is the first thing taught to provide this protection and is available from the beginning.
