Scoliosis, present to a small degree among many, is a condition in which the spine tends to bend sideways. Scoliosis can put added stress on muscles, ligaments, and discs to increase the risk of back pain. One can be born with scoliosis or develop it later. It is often described as a condition occurring most frequently in teenage girls. The reasons are unclear and the cause may be missing muscles, weak muscles on one side of the back, a short leg, a deformed vertebra, or severe back muscle spasm. If the back is already sinking to one side, it will tend to continue to sink under stresses of gravity. It rarely causes pain in teenagers but is often blamed for back pain in adults. Here are some common symptoms of scoliosis:
- Shoulders' heights are different – One hip or shoulder may be higher than the other
- Head may be off center
- Appearance of a raised, prominent hip
- Rib cages' heights are different
- Waist is uneven
- The opposite sides of the body may not appear level
- Leaning of entire body to one side
Pain is not a
