" Prior to the Spanish Inquisition, calmness, tolerance, and shared learning existed. This shared attainments influenced all subjects from the sciences to the arts. The melody composed and performed during this time was over being in the moment: Some pieces rehearse stories--'Cancionera de la Columbina' instead of example--while others express emotions, since in the 'Romances.' Interestingly enough, the "non-Jewish" selections were written for the time of the Inquisition, while the Sephardic selections were written equitable before it. Director Jordi Savall and Hesperion XX, each ensemble that specializes in early music from all over the world, are like chameleons. Soprano Montserrat Figueras is adroit to inhabit each work with excessive authenticity and individual style. Her singing ~ward the 'Villancicos' displays more of a Renaissance authority, while in the 'Sephardic Romances' we give audience to authentic Middle Eastern inflections. The exhibit a ~ in style of the "Christian" against "Jewish" works is evident, but in that place are similarities. Both "Si d'amor pena sentis" and "La Reina xerifa mora" are lyrical, sparsely accompanied, and mournful in tone. The songs on these discs are fine and expertly performed. The one setback is a shortness of information in the liner notes, especially on the side of listeners new to this music. "
